About

Dann Berg, a man with short hair, glasses, and a mustache looks down at a smartphone he’s holding in one hand. He’s wearing a teal T-shirt and standing against a dark, neutral background.

Hello. 👋 I'm Dann Berg and this is The Dann Chronicles—a free monthly newsletter I started in 2020 that's still going strong with over 1,000 subscribers.

Each month, I share five interesting things I've discovered across technology, culture, and the internet. But it's not just a link dump—I explain technical concepts in ways that make sense to everyone, share my honest opinions on what I'm seeing, and occasionally weave in personal experiences that connect these topics to real life.

📌 What you'll get

Each edition includes hand-picked articles, videos, and links across:

  • Technology and Innovation: AI developments, new apps, and tech trends explained in approachable ways. Whether you're technical or not, you'll understand what's happening and why it matters.
  • Culture and Society: Thought-provoking pieces on social dynamics, the creator economy, and how the internet is evolving (or devolving).
  • Entertainment and the Arts: Movies, TV shows, video games, and books with actual commentary beyond "this was good."
  • Personal Growth and Productivity: Practical workflows, tools, and strategies for improving your life—from note-taking systems to career development.

Each edition is thoughtfully curated and written. No algorithms, no niche gatekeeping, no trying to sell you anything. Just five things I found interesting this month, explained in a way that's engaging whether or not you're already into the topic. As one reader put it: it feels "created to share, not to sell."

đź’ˇ Why subscribe

What's common knowledge to one person might be completely novel to others. Readers tell me they appreciate learning about things outside their usual orbit—topics they wouldn't normally look up or know about. The newsletter has helped people get more comfortable with AI in their work, nudged them to host parties again, and changed how they approach personal knowledge management.

The variety is intentional. Some topics will resonate with you, some won't. But because each item is short and engaging, you can read through the whole thing even if you're not deeply into every subject.

✍️ Posting Schedule

You can expect a new edition of the newsletter to arrive on the last Monday of each month. Sometimes, if I'm feeling ambitious that month, it'll arrive on the penultimate Monday of the month, instead. So far, it's always delivered on a Monday, though.

🔍 Who am I?

It's great to meet you. As I said before, I'm Dann. I believe in making the internet more fun.

Professionally, I lead FinOps at Squarespace—working in the niche field of cloud cost visibility and optimization for nearly a decade. In a prior life, I was a tech journalist with staff writer positions at Laptop Magazine (now Tom's Guide) and The Verge, plus bylines across major publications like MSNBC and Mashable.

Beyond this newsletter, I occasionally publish long-form content on my personal website dannb.org and create tutorials for YouTube (mostly about Obsidian and productivity workflows).

I started The Dann Chronicles as a low-stakes creative outlet that requires consistent but minimal attention while I continue to push forward personally and professionally in other areas. It's a wonderful way to connect with new readers and stay in touch people in my personal life—and the act of writing, itself, helps me think through various topics.
